In 1976, Bill Richardson bought two concrete plants, one in Invercargill and one in Gore. On Thursday 29 October, we're returning to where it started to spend an evening with the people who built the fifty years that followed.

THE INVITATION
FIFTY YEARS IS A LONG TIME
TO KEEP TURNING UP
Two plants in Southland became eighteen across the country. That happened because of drivers who started before dawn, plant operators who knew their mix by feel, engineers who solved things nobody had solved here before, and customers who kept ringing back.
Some of these people have been with us for thirty and forty years. Some retired a long time ago. Some of you have been buying concrete off us since the eighties.
This evening is for all of you. One night, in the city where it started.

HOW WE GOT HERE
1976
TWO PLANTS
Bill Richardson acquires the concrete plants in Invercargill and Gore. Everything follows from here.
1982
THE SPLIT
H G Richardson & Sons is divided between BIll and his brother Ken. Bill's share includes Southern Transport and Allied Concrete.
1984
H W RICHARDSON
The group takes its name from Bill's own initials: Harold William.
1988
ALLIED MILBURN
A fifty-fifty joint venture with Milburn New Zealand, now Holcim takes Allied well beyond Southland.
1991-1992
CROMWELL GORGE
66,000m³ of stabilisation and tunnel lining, the biggest job Allied had ever taken on.
1996
HORSESHOE BEND
New Zealand's first roller-compacted dam, on the Teviot River.
2010
FORSYTH BARR STADIUM
10,000m³ into the only fully roofed stadium in the country.
2014
A FIRST FOR AUSTRALASIA
Allied becomes the first company in Australasia to receive an Environmental Product Declaration.
2016-2017
KAIKOURA
90,000m³ of concrete and stabilised material to reopen the road and rail north of Kaikōura. One plant and three pugmills, at times running around the clock.
2016-2021
CITY RAIL LINK
Nearly 100,000m³ and more than 20,000 truckloads into the largest transport infrastructure project New Zealand has undertaken.
2022
ECRETE
The low-carbon range launches, followed by EPD On-Demand, giving customers project-specific environmental data.
2026
FIFTY YEARS
Eighteen plants, one anniversary, and a night in Invercargill.

THE COLOURS HAVEN'T
Fittingly, we're marking fifty years inside the collection bill built. Bill's Shed sits within Transport World in Invercargill - the same city, the same family, the same eye for machinery that got us started.
Bring your stories. Most of you have one about a blue and yellow mixer turning up somewhere it probably shouldn't have been able to get to.
BEFORE YOU COME
GETTING THERE
Bill's Shed is inside Transport World at 491 Tay Street, in the centre of Invercargill. Street parking is generally easy in the evening.
STAYING THE NIGHT
The event falls on the Friday straight after Labour Weekend, so rooms and flights go early.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A seated black tie function - dinner, a bar, short speeches, and fifty years told through the people who were there for it.
